Bielman? Or Moskvina?
As I stated in another thread, I have been following figure skating since the Peggy Fleming days, so I have seen a lot of skaters come and go. One thing has always puzzled me, and I guess this board is as good a place as any to ask the question. The spin that is now referred to as a "Bielmann," with the raised leg high up behind--I swear I can remember Tamara Moskvina as a pair skater with Alexei Mischin doing the same spin years before Denise Bielmann came along. TM would do this spin, and her partner would do a spread-eagle in a circle around her as she spun around in the center. In this case, shouldn't this spin be called a "Moskvina" rather than a "Bielmann?"

I too would like to know
This is an example of why I'm confused about the naming game in ice-skating. I don't remember this but would be very interested to hear from someone who has an explanation, if you are in fact correct.
While here, can someone identify Sasha's move in this photo? http://www.cmmskating.com/classic.shtml>classic.shtml Dam, it won't work. It's on Sasha's website under Marshalls management in the article about Sasha and Plushenko winning gold at Skating Classic. I have never seen anyone else do this particular element. Has it been done before and by whom? How in the world does Sasha manage these amazing stretches? (see link above). She is holding her leg in the air backwards with almost 180 degree split and with a leanback to boot. Just marvelous!!! It almost looks like a Biellmann, but without catching her leg, both her arms are in the air over her head, so the raised leg is held without any other support. Does anyone know the name of this particular element? Robert |
People were doing the now-dubbed Bielmann spin before Denise Bielmann did it, but she was the one who made it her own by doing it at the end of every program. Thats how it got to be named the Bielmann spin. Sometimes how they decide to name a move is kind of...strange. But it's called the Bielmann now.

I saw an interview with Tamara Moskvina once and in that interview she claimed she WAS the first to do it...and now that you have said you saw her doing it first I believe it.
|
Maybe they don't call it the Moskvina because she did it in pairs with a partner...
|
Robert, I can't find the article you are talking about...

The campbells classic move where sasha is getting out of the biellman kind of looks like the same move where she does almost a quik biellman grab in her footwork section |
She never grabs the leg in the footwork. Its just a kick.

I think it was just a MITF where she was gliding along doing a Beillman position on a spiral. The picture is when she lets go. I think this changed to THIS position and then the side catchfoot spiral later on.
