I was just reading a book I got from the library and it said very scary stuff about Elvis Stojko and his coack Doug Leigh. I think it's a bit too violent to post here but it made me think about how dangerous skating really is. If anyone REALLY wants to know just PM me! Have you ever thought how dangerous it can be? Have you ever had a serious injury?

What do you mean by "scary stuff" about Elvis & his coach? Are you talking about injuries? Can you at least tell us generally what is says without getting graphic? If not, then I guess I will just PM you.

***Edited to add*** Also, what book is it??

Alyssa told me... it's not too bad (meaning graphic but it is bad) . Yea, if you thik about its pretty bad. It is about injuries. Specifically and injury occuring to his coach while he was practicing back flips...

Its no big deal, I think she can post it. Its not considered violent I don't think. Doug didn't try to kill Elvis or anything. LOL Just an injury that happaned while he was working on back flips.

Why make a thread about it if you're not even gonna say it?

I aske dother things in the thread, Clara. I asked if you'd ever had a serious injury or thought about how dangerous skating is! I'll post it but just brace yourself!!!

k these are the exact words brace yourself!!!! [everything is ok in the end]

You won't see backflips at competitions, but skaters still do them in shows. It takes guts to learn a backflip, and Elvis Stojko and coack Doug Leigh can tell you how NOT to learn it. In a freak accident(just remmeber everything is fine in the end) Stojko's blade punctured Leigh's forehead. went through his nose, just missed his eye-and cut his chest, requiring 25 stitches. "Safety was not in place" admits Leigh. "Elvis was in a safety harness but I had no protection. So the next day at the rink, in typical Elvis humor, he brought me his motocross safety equipment to wear: a helmet and chest protector.

OWCH! When I read that, it reminded me of the pairs accident when the guy kicked the girl's head durin side-by-side camels. (I know it was the Russian girl who tied for 1st at the Olympics... but her names escapes me at the moment! )
I can't imagine what it must have been like for Doug Leigh, but thank goodness he was fine in the end. I remember how in the other thread about backflips, we were talking about how hard it is for the skaters themselves... but we never really thought about other people.

FanFanFan, you got it about right, she is my favorite pairs skater and I can't even spell it - LOL. Elena had it really rough, her partner's skate blade cut into her skull and into her brain...she had to relearn to walk and talk. Amazing to think that girl that won the Olympics was in such bad shape.

And what about that other pairs skater..I forget his name, he had a really bad accident on the ice and now he can no longer skate and is premanently disfigured and I think brain damaged as well. What was his name????

One of the worst skating accidnets I have ever read about (other than Elena's accident) was what happend to Alexander Abt in the summer of 1996. The Russian National Team went on tour that summer. This accident happend in Mexico City, where Sasha Abt said the team "trained on disgusting ice". He fell during a jump, his leg twisted the wrong way, and his blade cut through his costume, skin, muscles and ligaments to his leg bone  . He needed emergancy surgery to save his leg, if the doctors didn't peform the emergancy surgery, his leg would have had to been amputated. Sasha said the doctors had to put plastic in his leg. He spent two weeks at a hospital in Mexico City, where the doctors told him "you're finished" and that he would never be able to walk or skate again. He went back to Russia. He couldn't walk for like 6 months. Like Elena, he had to learn how to walk and skate again. That accident took him out of skating for two years.

How horrible! Elena and Sasha are so brave. Its an amazing thought to think that two people that were in such horrible shape would become Olympic champion and a world class skater.

Oh, that was Paul Binnebose. Poor guy! He was a U.S. champion, wasn't he? He used to be so handsome, and now what a difference. Thank goodness I haven't really gotten anything serious, like SERIOUS serious from skating. I sprained my ankle two years ago from skating, but that's the only major injury I can think of. All sports have their inherent danger.
